Spring Lilacs

Guess what! It's now officially my favorite time of year - Lilac season! Lilacs are one of my most favorite flowers. I cannot get enough of them!

These lilacs were not at the Chicago Botanic Garden (shocking, I know!) They were in an office building parking lot. I know, right? Serendipitously, a friend notified me of their existence, remembering that I had a bit of an affinity for these fragrant lovelies. I was hesitant to go at first, worried that there was security, or someone might call the police about a strange girl with a camera going crazy over this random lilac bush in their parking lot. But my friend assured me I could fawn over them all I wanted. And boy, did I fawn (so many photos!)  They were just sitting there, being all beautiful in a drab and dreary suburban parking lot. I wish you could smell them through the photos-- heavenly!

Friday Photo Roundup - April 21

Hello and happy Friday to you! I hope your week was fantastic. This week seemed to have gone by rather quickly. Much like last week, I feel all I did was paint and work on my #the100dayproject and I'm loving it.

I did go to the Botanic Garden last Friday. There was so much more in bloom! It's really amazing what a difference a few days make. The daffodils were out in force, some of the tulips were starting to bloom, and the magnolia trees! Oh, let's talk about how magnificent the magnolia trees are! (Don't mind me, I'm swooning over here...)

I hope you enjoy this weeks photos of what's in bloom at the Garden!

I hope you have a wonderful weekend. When you are near a magnolia tree,  stand underneath and take a deep breath and enjoy the sweet smell of spring!

See you next week!

Friday Photo Roundup - April 14

Hi! Happy Friday! I hope you had a wonderful week. I feel like all I did was go to work, come home, make dinner, and paint. I mean, that's not a bad way to spend the week. But that's literally all I did. On the plus side, I haven't missed a day of my #The100DayProject, and I feel like I'm finally feeling less stressed about trying to paint something abstractly. It was a good week.

I went to the Garden last Friday afternoon and had a lovely lovely time. The highlight was definitely seeing the cherry blossom tree in the Japanese Garden in full pink blooming glory. It was magnificent. Pink tree, blue sky... perfection.

I hope you enjoy this weeks photos from last weeks trip to the Garden!

Friday Photo Roundup - April 7

Happy Friday! We made it! High fives all around!

This week was pretty exciting. We adopted (well, my mom adopted) a little rescue dog. Her name is Molly and she's a two year old Chihuahua and Boston terrier mix. She was rescued from a hoarders house where she lived in a crate for her entire two years of existence. She's the sweetest little pup. She's super clingy with my mom and will not leave her side (or chair.) We're working on giving her lots of love and attention and building up her confidence. Photos and a proper introduction coming soon!

This week was also the start of The 100 Day project. Every evening after dinner I locked myself inside my studio and tried to paint small 6x6 abstract paintings. It's.... going. It's actually a lot harder than I thought it would be. But I haven't quit yet! Follow me on Instagram and keep up with my 100 day project.

In the meantime, I hope you enjoy this weeks photos. These are all from last spring at the Garden.

Today I'm headed back to the Garden in order to capture and document spring happening. I really feel like spring sneaks up on us. One minute, trees and flower beds are bare, and then BOOM! Leaves and flowers happen, practically overnight! I want to capture moments that help me savor this brief season. This trip also marks the beginning of my much anticipated tulip stalking adventures. Yeah tulips, I'll be watching you.  (Be on the lookout for updates!)

I hope you have a lovely weekend!

Friday Photo Roundup - March 31

Happy Friday and last day of March (I know, I can't believe it either!) I hope you've had a good week.

This week, I'm in total spring mode and very much inspired by the tulips that have begun to sprout by my garage. I need to go on a tulip bulb rescue mission this weekend, but that's a whole big mess of a story I will share soon.

In the meantime, here are some spring tulip photo from last years adventures at the Garden.

Happy first week of Spring! This is my most favorite time of year, hands down. The days are noticeably longer, everything is starting to become green again, my most favorite flowers will bloom in a few short weeks, and it's perfect sweater weather.

Bonus points if you can name my favorite flowers...

This weeks photos are all about spring. I can't wait to go back to the garden and photograph and document more spring!

Hello! Happy St. Patrick's Day! I should have saved all of last week's greenery and foliage photos for this week flickr posts and today's roundup! That's okay, even though I posted more orchids this week, there is still plenty of green in these photos!

WIP - Brand New Garden Videos

Last summer, inbetween photographing all the pretty things, I took a few video clips of flowers and scenery while at the Garden.

april bern photography

I had a little idea in my head of what I wanted to do with these clips, but, you know how it goes with little ideas; they usually get pushed aside by the bigger and flashier ideas that fight for your attention. And then before you know it, those poor little ideas just sit on the back burner. Well, this little idea has been simmering long enough. I'm super exited to share my new teeny video I made with the clips from previous Garden adventures.

Click to view my Garden Video

I was so thrilled with how it turned out that I went back to the Garden last week, shot a bunch of new clips and came home and created this little spring video:

I am absolutely in love with the whole process: finding the perfect moments, capturing them, and editing them all together and creating a little story. I'm just sorry that this little idea sat on the back burner for so long!

I would love it if you check out and subscribe to my budding YouTube channel. You'll find these videos, as well as some "painting in progress" videos I created years ago.  I'm working on a little video featuring the orchids from the Orchid Show that I hope to have ready next week!

Have a great week and remember, an idea is still an idea no matter how small!
