Autumn at the Anderson Japanese Garden (Rockford, IL)

Fall this year was absolutely spectacular! The colors were especially vibrant and we had a perfect two week stretch in the middle of October where we had perfect weather and amazing colors. The leaves seemed to change overnight! I made it out to the Anderson Japanese Garden a few days after a really bad wind/rain storm so I feel like a lot of the leaves had been blown off, but really, I couldn’t complain- it was magical just being in that soothing, relaxing environment on a PERFECT sunny day. The soft fall light and layered garden design make this location especially beautiful for photography.

I was too busy enjoying the colors and the bright blue sky that I didn’t take many photos. Oh darn, looks like I have to go back next year! :D

Visiting Anderson Japanese Garden in the Fall

Best time to visit

Early to mid October typically offers the best fall color. Leaves begin changing in late September, but peak color usually happens in October depending on weather.

Morning light is especially beautiful and the garden tends to be quieter.

Photography tips

Soft, diffused light works well for photographing the textures and colors of the garden.

Look for:
• reflections in the water
• backlit leaves
• winding paths
• layered foliage

A slightly overcast day can produce beautiful, even color.

Favorite photo spots

Some of my favorite areas to photograph include:

• the waterfall
• the koi pond
• maple trees in peak color
• stone pathways
• layered garden views

Each season offers slightly different colors and textures!
