Taking Stock 05

This week has been a looooong week! It's the last full work week of the year. There are so many things I need to get and get done before Christmas! I'm so thankful we're not having Christmas at our house--man, I don't want the stress of trying to clean my house on top of everything else!

Cooking: chicken and dumpling soup.
Drinking: Panera coffee. Not my favorite, but it gets the job done.
Reading: The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up. So many people were loving this book, so I got it, but I'm not really a fan...
Wanting: to learn how to paint with watercolors
Looking: forward to the weekend.
Playing: Dj Spooky
Deciding: what cookies to make for our Christmas cookie exchange (important decisions over here)
Wishing: I was on vacation.
Enjoying: napping on the couch when I get home from work.
Waiting: for the last of my Christmas gifts to arrive.
Liking: having an unseasonably mild December!
Wondering:  how to create a clone of my self and have it sit at work.
Loving: the handmade soaps I bought from Pigeon River Soaps.
Considering: buying this class.
Buying: nothing that isn't grocery related. I need to go on a spending freeze until January!
Watching: Leftovers. It's been two seasons and I'm still not sure if I like this show...
Hoping: to sleep in tomorrow
Needing: a haircut.
Smelling: coffee
Wearing: the usual work attire: sweater, jeans, scarf, mittens.
Following: seanwes. Really really helpful/inspirational podcasts about entreprenuership.
Noticing: that i clench my teeth when I drive to work.
Knowing: not enough.
Thinking: about plans/projects for 2016.
Admiring: friends who decide they have had enough and leave their soul sucking jobs.
Sorting: though scraps of paper with my notes.
Getting: a little excited to see the star wars movie this weekend.
Bookmarking: 7 nifty online tools that will change the way you blog
Coveting: free time.
Disliking: my hour (and sometimes longer) commute to and from work.
Opening: Christmas card in the mail! Yay!
Feeling: a little envious of (and really happy for!) friends who decide they have had enough and leave their soul sucking jobs!
Snacking: too much!
Helping: my mom with her etsy shop. I'm re-editing her product titles and tags.
Hearing: a lot of chatter in the office.

Wishing: I was a better writer.
Enjoying:  The 4 1/2 day weekend!
Waiting:  for prints for the newton-mas cards I'm making for a favorite flickr friend to hurry up and get here.
Liking: most of the items in my latest Stitch Fix!
Loving: my new bullet journal.
Hoping: we're done with the snow for the rest of the winter! (a girl can dream, right?)
Needing: to break up with sugar. Again.
Smelling The Fresh Balsam candle from Bath and Body works. 
Wearing: felted slippers that took two years to make.
Noticing: All of my blessings.
Thinking: about all I'm thankful for. And it's a lot.
Feeling: pretty good.

Fitbit is Wrecking my Life!

You all know what the Fitbit is, right? It's this little tracker device you wear and it monitors your daily activity like steps, stairs, and even nutrition and sleep. I got mine back in January and I really like it. My step goal is a lofty 10,000 and on most days, I can make goal. But if I have plans and I don't quite hit my goal-- it's okay, I don't usually stress out about it.



One of the nice features fitbit has is the ability to connect with your friends and get involved in daily/weekly/weekend challenges. Sounds like fun, right? What a great way to keep one another motivated and inspired. 


DON'T DO IT! it will wreck your life!


Let me explain. I am NOT a competitive person. I hate sports (read: I'm TERRIBLE at sports) and I don't play many games. If I do play and I'm losing, I fully embrace the loss as I usually expect to lose anyway. But these fitbit challenges? They have completely turned me into a competitive MANIAC!

Here are the top 5 ways fitbit is wrecking my life:

1. I cannot get anything done. Literally. I'm not even joking or exaggerating about this.  All I do when I get home from work is walk in circles at the gym, or at home (or both.) I don't have time to make dinner, clean, or work on crafty/artsy projects. All I do is walk. In circles.

2. I don't see my family, friends, or husband. If I have a challenge, I try not to make plans after work.  If I do manage to make it out of the house to see family/friends, I leave early so I can go home and get some steps in so I can make my goal or get ahead. Or I stay and feel guilty. If I'm at home and G is home, I'm downstairs walking in circles and he's upstairs watching TV.

3. I'm so crazy tired. I normally wake up for work at 5.30ish, but now I'm waking up at 5ish (or earlier!) and staying up waaaaaaaay too late to make sure I get my steps in and try to get ahead. Because if I'm not ahead by a couple thousand steps, I'm not happy. 

4. I've worn holes in all of my socks. I've had to replace all of my socks at least twice now.

5. I check the progress of the challenge obsessively. Seriously, all the time. I walk from the house to the car. Check my stats (18 steps.) Walk from the car to the office. Check my stats (156 steps.) Walk to the bathroom. Check my stats (25 steps.) You get the idea.

And I have to win. I will wake up even earlier than I already do to get in some steps before heading out to work, I will stay up until midnight just to make sure I'm significantly ahead. I walk to the bathroom at work almost every hour. I walk in circles at home so much so that I think I'm wearing out the carpet. G suggested he make dinners that I can carry and eat while walking and I thought this was a fine idea. I feel guilty if I make plans and I'm not able to get steps in and I'm in "danger" of losing.

This is insane. There's gotta be a pill for this, right?

Deep breath... here goes...20 random facts about me...

1. I LOVE listening to pledge drives. My favorite pledge drive to listen to is NPR.

2. I have a HUGE crush on Ira Glass. (It's totally the glasses.)

3. I didn't learn to drive until I was 25. I lived in Chicago and could walk or take public transit anywhere I wanted to go. Or I got rides from my friends who drove.

4. When I was little, I dreamed of being a singer, ballerina, vet, archaeologist, artist, and interior decorator. Thankfully, being an artist panned out...

5. This is super controversial, but I don't like "The Princess Bride." There. I said it. I hope we can still be friends.

6. Another controversial one, and I can't believe I'm openly admitting to this in public, but... I like Domino's pizza. It's that garlic seasoning on their crust! There must be crack in it. (This isn't a deal breaker, is it?)

7. Commercials make me cry.

8. Singer/songwriter is my favorite music. The sadder and more soulful, the better.

9. I'm addicted to coffee. No, really.

10. I auditioned for a play once. I made it to callbacks, but I didn't go back.

11. Chatting with friends over coffee is my favorite social activity.

12. My first plane trip was to Ireland. I was a senior in college.

13. I'm in LOVE with the Pacific Northwest and dream of living there.

14. I despise mushrooms.

15. My spirit animal is a sloth.

16. I have a purple belt in Karate.

17. I've never been camping (hello! City girl here!) The thought of bugs and peeing outside absolutely terrifies me.

18. I'm a sucker for anyone asking for help. "Can you help me" is my kryptonite. I can't resist.

19. My biggest pet peeve is people who are late and don't call and let me know they are running late. Once I know you're running late, I'm not upset anymore.

20. I'm terrible at directions. You tell me to go right, and I turn left. You tell me to go left, and I turn right. I blame that on being left-handed...

Want to talk like a Pirate? Here are five basic terms to master:

  • Ahoy! - "Hello!"
  • Avast! - Stop and give attention. It can be used in a sense of surprise, "Whoa! Get a load of that!" which today makes it more of a "Check it out" or "No way!" or "Get off!"
  • Aye! - "Why yes, I agree most heartily with everything you just said or did."
  • Aye aye! - "I'll get right on that sir, as soon as my break is over."
  • Arrr! - This one is often confused with arrrgh, which is of course the sound you make when you sit on a belaying pin. "Arrr!" can mean, variously, "yes," "I agree," "I'm happy," "I'm enjoying this beer," "My team is going to win it all," "I saw that television show, it sucked!" and "That was a clever remark you or I just made." And those are just a few of the myriad possibilities of Arrr!

Happy Tuesday! Hope your long holiday weekend was fantastic! I will be posting later on with updates and photos!  In the meantime, here are some quotes from the Dalai Lama who celebrates his 75th birthday today:

i bought this postcard as a reminder to do something i was afraid of-- to look fear in the face and laugh. It was easy to do when I was in Oregon and faced with all sorts of new experiences. But here-- i tend to chose comfort, and fall into a routine too easily.
